Knocking Suzuki Grand Vitara

August 24, 2021

2006-2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara vehicles up to production date of July 9, 2007 may exhibit a lower-engine knocking noise after engine warm-up. The cause may be a mis-adjusted drive belt tension which will cause the crankshaft to abnormally oscillate, which can produce an audible knock sound, similar to excessive bearing clearance noise. NOTE: A mis-adjusted belt will not result in internal engine damage. The tension of the water pump/alternator belt was changed in production from 700N to 650N to reduce this audible knock. Use one of the two following procedures to adjust the drive belt tension to specifications found in the instructions. Also verify that tension is correct on the power steering/AC belt. The engine should be cold when adjustment is made. Suzuki recommends using the Gates Sonic Tension Meter, P/N 507C. WATER PUMP/ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT TENSION ADJUSTMENT

  1. Loosen bolt (2) at the tension pulley and remove tension bolt pulley (1).

  2. Insert a hex wrench into the exposed hex hole of the tensioner pulley (3). Rotate the wrench to adjust belt tension to the desired specification.

  3. Hold tension with the hex wrench and tighten the tensioner bolt (2). Remove the hex wrench and install bolt (1), and torque the bolts to 18 lb-ft.

  4. Start the engine and run for approximately 2-3 seconds and stop the engine.

  5. Re-check belt tension and re-adjust if necessary.

POWER STEERING/AC BELT ADJUSTMENT

  1. Loosen the tensioner pulley (3) bolts (1.a).

  2. Using a hex wrench, rotate the tensioner pulley to adjust tension.

  3. While holding tension with the hex wrench, tighten the bolts to 18 lb-ft.

  4. Start the engine and run for 2-3 seconds and stop the engine. Re-adjust if needed.

TENSION CHECK METHODS Method 1 (torque wrench) Attach the appropriate size hex socket to the torque wrench and apply torque to achieve belt tension: Specification for torque wrench method: water pump/alt. belt: Re-adjustment……………5 lb-ft New belt………………….10 lb-ft Specification for torque wrench method: PS/AC belt: Re-adjustment…………….8.5 lb-ft New belt…………………..12.5 lb-ft Method 2 (sonic tension meter) Use the Gates Sonic Tension Meter. Set frequency filter setting as “Standard” with the following data: Frequency Filter Setting: Water pump/alternator belt Mass: 58 Width: 1.0 Span: 215.0 Specification for sonic tension meter method: water pump/alternator belt: Re-adjustment………………375 +/- 50N New belt…………………….650 +/- 50N Frequency filter setting: Power steering/AC belt: Mass: 61.2 Width: 1.0 Span: 144.4 Specification for sonic tension meter method: power steering/AC belt: Re-adjustment…………400 +/- 50N New belt……………….500 +/- 50N
